To Kill a Mockingbird summary #4

Page 227-309, chapter 21-31
The trial for Tom Robinson is still going on, during the day Scout and Jem was gone, this was noticed by Calpurnia. Then later on Atticus knew that Scout and Jem are in the colored balcony. Jem and Scout wanted to hear the verdict. So Calpurnia just took the kids for dinner and in the evening they went back to the courtroom. The courtroom was still full, Jem was listening with anger, because Tom is still the one who needs to go to prison. In Alabama, white guys always win the colored guys. Jem was crying that night because of the injustice verdict. Later on Tom Robinson has been sent to another prison. He was trying to escape, so he was shot to death. It was hard for Atticus to tell the Robinson’s family that Tom was dead and also for Scout to know about it. Tom’s dead is nothing but a dead of a weak people. He should’ve been protected better than this but because of Bob Ewell who wins him in the trial that causes him to be sent to the prison.
One day Aunt Alexandra took the missionary to Atticus’s house for tea and Scout was also there. They were talking about the weak people all over the world, this is a part from the lesson that Scout learns. When summer was about to end, Scout saw the bug and she was about to stab it, but Jem stopped her and said that do not do anything to the bug, because it didn’t harm you or do anything to you. Just like when Atticus told the kids about killing Mockingbird is a sin because Mockingbirds do not harm anything. When summer ends and the kids return back to school, its time for them to pass the Radley’s house again, this time they were not as fear of the house as before because they grew up.
Bob Ewell who was in the trial gets a job but he lose it a few days later because Atticus took his job. So he was so furious. One day Bob Ewell was following Helen Robinson or wife of Tom Robinson, he was about to do something bad to her but someone found him following Helen first so he stopped Bob. Aunt Alexandra concerns that Bob Ewell has some anger with everyone who connected to the case. One night when there’s a Halloween party, Scout went there with Jem because Atticus and Aunt Alexandra didn’t want to go with them. On the way when they were back home. Scout and Jem got attacked by Bob Ewell but Scout didn’t get hurt, Jem did. Then there’s a guy who carries Jem back home, first Scout didn’t realize who he was but then she knew that he was Boo Radley or Arthur Radley. Then later on they just knew that Bob Ewell was dead with a knife stabbed on him. It could tell that he was meant to stab the kids but he could because Boo Radley helped the kids first.
Scout just realizes that Boo Radley is actually a nice person. Scout has been chatting with Boo for a while so now she knows that he is a real nice person. There’s a phrase in the story which says “Atticus was right. One time he said you never really know a man until you stand in his shoes and walk around in them. Just standing on the Radley porch was enough.”Scout has grown throughout this story. She has seen people around her and learns from them, from their mistakes, from the injustice of this world and from the unfairness of this world.

Atticus Finch is the defender of Tom Robinson, and during this chapter Tom’s trial is being held, Atticus is busy going to his office and to the court. So Jem and Scout as Atticus’s kids got teased by everybody, just because his father is the coloured-folk defender. During the night when Jem was about to go to her bed, she found Dill hiding under her bed. Dill ran away from his house because his mother and his new father didn’t pay any attention to him. So when Atticus knows, he let Dill sleep with Jem and find Dill more food to eat.
As Tom’s trial is nearing and Tom is to move to Maycomb jail, Atticus has been busy about preparing for the trial. One day Jem, Scout and Dill went to Atticus’s office and they were hiding and they see Atticus in front of the Maycomb jail with folks. They were curious about what they are doing out there so they were trying to see what was happening. Then finally Atticus finds out the the kids were looking at him and his folks, Atticus told Jem to take everybody home but jem refuses. After that they started to meet more people, Scout talked to her friend’s father and he were some kind of ashamed by her so Atticus took the kids home.
When time for the trial comes Atticus was in the court and also Jem and Scout follows Calpurnia to the court to watch him and Tom Robinson. Everybody was there in the court room. When the witnesses need to speak, some was saying that Tom is the one who was raping the girl but some says he didn’t do it. Tom Robinson’s crime on that night was found by Mr. Ewell, it was at night and he saw Tom was raping his daughter. Mr. Ewell was saying that Tom was with her daughter last night. Then again when another witness comes, she said that the girl with Tom was her, she called Tom to help her and then Tom took advantage of that, and she also told Tom to kiss her. So right now Tom is almost flawless, even the girl who was always with Tom said that she has never has trouble with Tom.
The trial is still being held. Jem and Scout sneaks off the room once and then when they went back to the room, Atticus was closing the trial, he concluded that maybe it was other guy that was raping the girl but he was ashamed and also the girl. So they were saying that they guy was Tom just because she was ashamed.

Jem and Scout take the as much snow as they can from Miss Maudie’s yard to make a snow man. During that night Atticus wakes Scout up to help him do some of his work but then when Scout went out of the street Miss Maudie’s house was on fire. Everybody wakes up just to help save as much furniture as they can for Miss Maudie and the fire-helper of the town and the nearby town comes to help. During that busy moment someone put a blanket on Scout’s, but when anybody ask her about that she has no idea about who puts it on her. This could refer back to the previous situation that Scout and Jem found the strange presents, so they are now thinking that everything was from Boo Radley. In the next mornig Miss Maudie was okay with the loss of her house now.
Atticus has been asked to defend Tom Robinson or a nigga who got caught because he rapes a white girl. So Scout’s friend called Atticus as a Scout Finch’s daddy defends niggers, Scout was angry and she early had a fight with that friend. Atticus takes Scout and Jem to visit the Finchs, there Scout and Jem met Francis or her cousin which she considered him as the most boring boy she has ever met. He says bad things to Scout and he also says bad things about Atticus, and of course Scout couldn’t take it, she fought with Francis and the elders believe that Francis is a good boy not Scout or Jem. Scout heard a conversation between her dad and her uncle it was about Tom Robinson that he is not a bad guy that Atticus shouldn’t defend.
Atticus gave Scout and Jem an air rifle they’re allowed to shoot any birds they want but not Mocking birds because. Atticus said killing Mokcing birds is a sin because they do not harms, they did nothing except making nice songs for everyone. Atticus is actually an old father comparing any fathers of Scout and Jem friends. Atticus is a lawyer so he works in the office and he only read he did not go for hunting, fishing, shooting or anything like other men in the town. One day Atticus’s friend told him to shoot an old dog, he did it and that was the first time that Scout and Jem know that their father could do such things like this. Miss Maudie told Jem and Scout that Atticus was actually good at shooting when he was a teenager, then Jem decided to keep that as a secret because he thinks that is his father wanted them to know about this he would let them know it.
There’s a house of Miss Dubose in the town, Miss Dubose is not really a nice woman she is old and she is sick. Atticus has always told Jem not to fight with anybody, but one day when Miss Dubose tells Jem that his father is not any better than the niggers and the trash he works for. Jem loses his temper; he destroys all of her camellia bushes. Jem got punished by going to Miss Dubose house every day and read a story to her for a month. Miss Dubose gradually dies during the time, when she died she has given a single white camellia to Jem also.
Then Jem grew up and he is now 12,  Calpurnia took Jem and Scout to the black-people church. This thing makes both of them learns about the black people and they are learning the differences of the black people with the white people. By the time they went back to their house, they met Aunt Alexandra. She will be living with the kids for a while. Aunt Alexandra is kind of proud of being the Finch and she came here to spend time with the kids and talking about the families in this Maycomb County. She has been explaining about the Finch’s generation by generation. Scout and Jem did not as proud as they are supposed to be, they got lectured by Atticus, he didn’t do anything much but Scout cried.
